Anna Karenina

Author: Leo Tolstoy

Anna Karenina was first published in 1877. It had begun to appear in folio form in the journal Russki Véstnik (The Russian Messenger) between January 1875 and April 1877, but its publication was never completed due to Tolstoy’s disagreement with his publisher over the ending of the novel. Therefore, the first complete edition of the text appeared in book form in 1878.

The novel is considered one of the crowning works of realism. For Tolstoy, Anna Karenina was his first real novel. The physical appearance of the title character seems to be inspired by Maria Hartung (1832-1919), the first-born daughter of the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.

Lady Chatterly’s Lover

Author: D. H. Lawrence

Lady Chatterley’s Lover (often abbreviated Lady Chatterley) is a 1928 novel by British writer David Herbert Lawrence, also often abbreviated D. H. Lawrence.

The work caused scandal and was banned at the time because of scenes depicting explicit sexual intercourse. Published in Florence in 1928, it was not printed in the UK until 1960.

The Penguin edition is the second best-seller of the same, second only to his edition of the Odyssey. Because of the erotic content of the book and the easy access to the work that a low-cost publication such as Penguin’s would imply, there was a serious attempt to ban the edition. The plea in defense of the publication made by Krishna Menon, the publisher’s lawyer, is still being studied at Oxford.
